What are edibles?

Weed edibles are food and drink products infused with cannabis. They allow users a convenient, discreet, and enjoyable way to consume cannabis without the extra accessories that vaping and smoking require.

Types of edible products

While homemade weed brownies have been popular since the ‘60s, a wide variety of edible cannabis products have been introduced over the last two decades, making it easier to manage your dosage and indulge in edibles that suit your lifestyle. Consumers can now find cannabis-infused:

Many more snacks and treats are available at dispensaries near you on Weedmaps.

How edibles are made

Making cannabis edibles requires precision, patience, and practice.

Before cannabis can be added to food or beverages, it needs to be decarboxylated (or heated). This converts the THCA (the non-psychoactive compound) into THC (the psychoactive compound that gets you high).

The most common way to decarb cannabis is by baking it in the oven at around 220°F–240°F (104°C–115°C). Edible manufacturers will use industrial decarboxylation ovens or vacuum ovens to allow for precise control over time, temperature, and atmosphere.

The decarbed cannabis is then lab-tested to measure THCA-to-THC conversion rates before it’s either infused directly into oils/fats or processed into a concentrate for use in edibles.

Once the edibles are produced, they’re lab-tested, packaged in child-resistant containers, and distributed to dispensaries for sale.

Benefits

Whether consuming edibles recreationally or for medical reasons, they have some benefits that other forms of consumption don’t offer.

  • Smokeless: There is no smoking involved with edibles, meaning no lung irritation, smoke, vapor, or odor

  • Convenient: Edibles are often packaged in portable, secure containers, making for easy consumption and transportation

  • Precise dosing: Edible products are precisely dosed and labeled accordingly, so consumers don’t have to worry about taking too much or too little

  • Effects: While edible effects tend to have a longer onset time than other consumption methods, the effects can last much longer, offering all-day and all-night relief

  • Discreet: Minimal odor, subtle packaging, and no smoke or vapor allow consumers to indulge without drawing any attention

Bioavailability: Why edibles hit different

While edibles typically have lower bioavailability than vaping or smoking cannabis, the effects can often feel stronger and last longer — here’s why:

Only 4%–20% of the THC in edibles reaches the bloodstream, but thanks to the liver, the THC is converted into a stronger version called 11-hydroxy-THC, which makes the high feel more intense and last a long time. It’s like your liver upgrading THC into THC Premium. That’s why even a small dose of edibles can hit harder and the high sticks around longer than, say, smoking a joint.

How to shop for edibles

Understanding labels

Just like shopping for groceries, it’s important to understand edible labels so consumers know what they’re putting in their bodies.

Most cannabis edible packages will be labeled with some or all of the following:

  • Cannabinoid content, including THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and/or CBD (cannabidiol)

  • Ingredients

  • Manufacturer info

  • Nutrition facts

  • Cannabis warning statements

  • Universal cannabis symbol

  • Batch number and lab testing info

  • Serving size and dosing instructions

Consumers should read the label and ingredients list carefully to make sure they dose accordingly and are aware of any potential allergens or side effects.

Choosing the right edibles

Choosing the right edibles may seem daunting, but like with picking any marijuana product, it really comes down to needs and preferences.

Consumers should think about their lifestyle, what they want to consume, and what results they want.

If they’re heading to a BBQ in the summer, a THC drink, like an infused watermelon sparkling water or infused beer, might be a good choice. If they like edibles before bed, indica-forward weed gummies and chocolates could hit the spot. If they spend a lot of time in the kitchen, an infused olive oil or cannabutter can elevate their dishes. If they need to be up early, there are sativa-dominant THC coffee drinks available.

No matter what consumers choose, they should check for clear labeling, quality ingredients, professional packaging, and good taste and texture.

How to consume edibles

Directions and dosing

Edible package labels will usually include the total amount of THC and/or CBD in milligrams in the entire package and the number of milligrams of THC and/or CBD each serving contains.

For example, if a consumer buys a 10-pack of THC gummies that contains 100 milligrams of THC (total), and one gummy is one serving, the label should say:

  • 10 gummies

  • 100 mg THC

  • Serving size: 1 gummy

  • 10 mg THC per serving

This means one serving (one THC gummy) contains 10 mg of THC, and the entire bag contains 10 THC gummies, totaling 100 mg of THC.

One serving is usually a good starting point when consuming edibles — a consumer can always eat or drink more if the effects aren’t strong enough.

Frequently asked questions

Edibles tend to hit slower than other forms of cannabis. Whether eating a mint, a cookie, or a piece of toast with cannabutter, the effects are reported to take anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours to feel the effects of an edible.

Keep in mind that infused drinks are reported to kick in faster — often between 15 and 30 minutes — because liquids digest more quickly than solids.

Just go slow and be patient, grasshopper — if you bought a quality product from a reputable brand, the high will hit you eventually.

The effects of marijuana edibles can last a few hours or more. It really depends on the product, the amount consumed, the ingestion method, and the consumer’s overall cannabis use.

Once the effects set in, they can hit hard and last several hours.

If a consumer is new to edibles, it’s best to start low and slow — take one serving and practice patience — the effects will set in eventually.

THC gummies are a form of edible, while edibles refer to any cannabis-infused drink or food product.

To properly store edibles, it’s best to refer to the label for any recommendations. Some require refrigeration, while others can be stored in the pantry.

If the label doesn’t specify how or where to store the product, store it in a cool, dark, dry place in its original container and out of reach of children and pets. Be sure to note the expiration date on the package so you know how long the product is good for.
